Language teacher training in adult education (certificate course SVEB 1)
General
If you want to teach adults, you need to train as a language teacher in adult education. This qualification is recognised all over Switzerland.
Module title
Conduction of language courses for adults/SVEB certificate course Level 1 (FA-M1)
Target group
The aim is to qualify participants to independently design, conduct, and evaluate language courses.
The training is addressed to persons wishing to work as teachers in adult education, especially in the field German as a Foreign Language/Second Language or teachers wishing to acquire further qualifications.
Description
The training is divided into five topics which are integrated in the course structure giving participants a comprehensive understanding of the conditions and possibilities of teaching a foreign language. In addition to theoretical principles of adult-specific learning processes the topics include practical planning of language courses as well as variable conception, delivery, and evaluation of language lessons.
Participants can moreover arrange to acquire the necessary proof of practical experience within the scope of an integrated teaching activity at academia language centres.

Requirement
Participants are required to be proficient in German (minimum B2) and have a high capacity of linguistic expression.

45 contact hours of 120 minutes each (90 hours)
plus 165 h of independent study.
Course format
In-service training 15 days in total (Fridays or Saturdays); at the following times:
10:00–12:00, 13:00–15:00, 15:30–17:00, plus independent study.

Certificate of completion
Participants receive a course confirmation upon completion. A SVEB 1 certificate is gained subject to evidence of the required 150 hours of practical experience.
CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
General
The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is the most frequently recognised basic qualification for English teachers in the world. A unique combination of theory and practice gives teachers fundamental knowledge, hands-on teaching experience as well as the ability to teach English competently in various contexts.

CELTA is regarded as a criterion for acceptance to most language schools worldwide.

Description
The course:

• teaches you the principles of effective teaching
• provides a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners
• gives candidates hands-on teaching practice and feedback from experienced tutors

The syllabus covers five main topics:

• learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context
• language analysis and awareness
• language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing
• planning and resources for different contexts
• developing teaching skills and professionalism
Prerequisite
Cambridge regulations state that candidates must:

• be at least 20 years old by the end of the course
• have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers
• have a minimum of a high C1 level in English, both written and spoken that enables them to follow the course and complete all the assessed elements successfully.

It is also strongly recommended that candidates have formal school-leaving qualifications that entitle them to enter higher education.

Due to the demands of the course and in the interest of the candidates acceptance on the course is not automatic but through a selection procedure. This includes the completion of an application form, pre-interview tasks, and an interview.

Certificate of completion
Certificates are awarded to candidates who meet the assessment criteria. Assessment is both continuous and integrated. There is no final examination.

The two types of assessment are:

Teaching Practice
Candidates teach for a total of 6 hours, working with adult classes at a minimum of two levels of ability.
Assessment is based on overall performance and progress.

Written Assignments
The four written assignments (each 750–1,000 words) focus on:
• -analysing and responding to adult learner needs
• -analysing language for teaching purposes
• -teaching language skills
• -reflecting on classroom teaching

The possible certificate grades are: Pass A, Pass B, Pass, or “No Certificate Awarded”.
